It has been a while since I wrote on this blog. There are many reasons for the lack of posts, but many of them will end up being part of the story I will be sharing in future blog posts. So, for today, I would like to share a bit of what I have been processing for a while now.
When I was in college, I really thought teaching music was all I ever wanted to do. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVED it! I deeply enjoyed teaching elementary music for the 7 years that I did. Now, however, I have noticed many shifts in that desire. I have discovered that I simply love to teach, period. It doesn't matter what subject, it doesn't really matter what age. I just love the process of learning and discovery that a person goes through as they come up against challenges and overcome them! I love that process in my own life, and I certainly love helping others overcome and learn things they thought they wouldn't be able to do. I have found great joy in watching students discover something new about themselves and seeing them thrive with the new information. Even though many of them struggled at first, if they were willing to persevere, they were able to reach whole new levels of learning and fulfillment that many of them never thought possible at the outset. That is why I teach.
Even though I started out teaching Elementary Music, I have gone on to teach English to Spanish-speaking students here in Peru, I have tutored many students in the US from Kindergarten through High School, I spent a period of time substitute teaching in the public school system in the US, and now I have been homeschooling two missionary children here in Peru for a couple of years. Through all of that, there is something profoundly satisfying about learning about each and every student and helping them succeed in whatever they want to do with their lives. Having taught students in two different countries, two different languages, two distinct cultures, and two different continents, I have noticed there are a lot of things that are very similar. In my upcoming blog posts, I would like to explore some of the areas with you all.
I teach because I love seeing students flourish! If you are a teacher, what is your favorite part about teaching? If you are not a teacher, is there a specific teacher you have known that stands out in your memory? Why? I would love to hear from you in the comments!
